Selection Process

Students who participated in previous BHS Musical Pit Orchestras have an advantage of being selected over students who have not played in the pit orchestra before - pending their attendance and achievement.
The orchestration and instrumentation for each musical production are different, i.e., some musicals might only include guitar, bass guitar, piano/synthesizer, and drumset, and some musicals include string instruments, woodwinds, brass, and other percussions. Each musical production is different. As a result, there is no guarantee that students who played in the BHS Musical Pit Orchestra for one year are guaranteed to participate in the next musical. Not because of a student's skill or musicality but because of instrumentation.
Space for the pit orchestra also determines the size of the Pit Orchestra, i.e., this affects the number of students who can participate.
The music for a musical pit orchestra is composed and designed for professional Broadway musicians. Therefore, the difficulty of the music can impact who plays in the BHS Pit Orchestra, i.e., in some instances, professional musicians will need to be hired instead of using BHS students.
The BHS Pit Orchestra selection process includes all the information above and consultation with the BHS Orchestra Director and BHS Band Director.
Students selected for the BHS Pit Orchestra must participate in 90% of all BHS Musical Pit Orchestra rehearsals and 100% of performances. Students should communicate conflicts as soon as possible. See the calendar below for rehearsal and performance times.
We will do everything we can to stick to the schedule on the calendar. If a change to the calendar occurs, communication will be timely and respectful.

Attendance

In order to participate in the BHS Musical Pit you must be able to attend 90% of all scheduled rehearsals, attend 100% of the performances, and be willing to work on your music outside of rehearsals.

Please check your email and the BHS Musical Pit Calendar. If students are preparing properly, we may not need to rehearse as a group on all of the dates listed. I believe in being efficient and being respectful of the students time. If the students are prepared we may be able to cancel some of the rehearsals.
