Berkley Bands | Spring Concert/Awards | Marching Band 2022 | Cedar Point Trip | Graduation | Band Photo Makeups

Greetings Students, and Families:

I hope you are all doing well. I can't believe that we are less than two months away from ending the school year. As we near the corner, I want to share an update on some upcoming events.

17 - May | Spring Concert/Awards

Our last concert of the school year is on Tuesday, May 17. Last year, due to the pandemic, we held this Spring Concert outside, which produced a lot of positive feedback. If the weather is nice enough for us to host the spring Concert outdoors again, we will do so. If it rains or snows (based on current trends), I will move the Spring Concert into the BHS Auditorium. You will receive more details about the spring concert soon in a separate email.

6 - June | Mandatory Marching Band Information

Marching Band will be revving up soon. There will be a mandatory informational meeting for marching band students (new and returning) and one of their parents/guardians at 7:00pm on Monday, June 6. This meeting will be in tandem with the June Berkley Instrumental Booster Meeting.

I am very excited to finally go into a marching band season with the ability to touch base with all of the members and their families before we leave for summer vacation. I believe this will be a great marching band season, and I can't wait to meet and greet all of our new and returning marching band students.

A separate email will be sent soon regarding the spring and summer rehearsal schedule. If you have any questions about marching band, contact Mr. Thomann.

26 - May | Cedar Point Trip

I have been collaborating with Mr. Engle and Ms. Hoste in planning a trip to Cedar Point for our band students. If there is enough student interest and with chaperone support, we will move forward with detailing plans for a Cedar Point trip on Thursday, May 26.

I understand that this is two days after our graduation seniors' last school day; unfortunately, it is the only date that worked for Anderson Middle School, Norup Internation School, and Berkley H.S. without conflicts.

Please take this brief survey to aid us in planning the trip.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScdLT0TMIJMBhAR4yl8vccQGsOGHCdbUNotCUzILo_ZJWQNVQ/viewform

9 - June | Graduation

Please save the date. Each year the Berkley H.S. Bands perform for the senior graduation ceremony. To provide full instrumentation, i.e., sound our best for this ceremony, all band students, grades 9-11, must attend this performance.

More information will be sent in the coming weeks.

Band Photograph Makeup Information

If you did not get your picture taken on Monday by BAK photography, contact Mr. Thomann.

EMAIL CORRESPONDENCE | 22 Apr. 2022

Berkley Bands | Composite Photo Tuesday, 26 of April

Greetings Everyone:

Next Tuesday, April 26, the BHS Band students will be photographed by BAK Photography to create a composite photo of the 2021-22 band students, to be hung in the band room for years to come. Every student received an order form that includes the details on ordering a band photo for your students - this may be an individual photo or a composite photo if you choose to purchase a photo/s. This year's photograph will include all of our band students, i.e., marching band students and concert band students who are not in marching band. Please look below for details on what to wear on Tuesday.

***Band composite photographs are taken every other year.

Marching Band Students

Marching Band students will need to wear their bibbers (marching band pants) and the Marching Band top. Contact Mr. Thomann if you have any questions.

Students may drop off their marching band uniform in the band room in the morning on one of the racks in the band room. Be sure to have your name somewhere on the garment bag.

Non-Marching Band Students

Please wear "concert black" - what you have been wearing for concerts is acceptable. Please wear a business, or formal wear, i.e., a black button-up shirt with a collar with the choice of a black bow-tie, etc.

Students may wear their concert black clothing to school or change into their clothes at the beginning of their band class.

Day of the Picture

Students need to change in one of the dressing rooms or bathrooms at the beginning of their band class. Once you have changed into your uniform, put your instrument together and wait for instructions from Mr. Thomann in the band room.

If you have questions, contact Mr. Thomann.

Berkley Bands | Jazz Clinic Recap and Pic/Video

Greetings Jazz Students and Families:

Thank you to everyone for making it to the Jazz Clinic last night. It was an incredible evening spent with some of Detroit's finest musicians. This night was made possible by a grant-funded from the local 5 Detroit Federation of Musicians. The jazz students had the opportunity, many of them for the first time, to hear live jazz from the Nate Winn Quintet. Nate Winn is a percussionist and leader of the group that consisted of Nate Winn on Drums, Kris Kurzowa on Guitar, Brandon Rose on Bass, Demetrius Nabors on Piano, and Marcus Elliot on Tenor Saxophone. The students played our set of music that we will be playing for the MSBOA Jazz Festival next week and received feedback, and ended with a Q&A session and another performance by the Nate Winn Quintet. It was awesome!

I attached a picture of the students with our guest artists and clinicians and a video of the last tune.

Enjoy!

Berkley Bands | Congratulations

Greetings Students and Families:

Congratulations to the student for their fine performances tonight. The Concert Band/Wind Symphony and the Symphonic Band received Straight Division I ratings from the adjudicators. This achievement is a direct result of the work and time that they invested in by focusing on and relying on the learning process. One of the adjudicators wrote the following on their judge's sheet, "You've represented your program, school, and community very well. Bravo!".

Thank you to our chaperones for their assistance, supervision, and support. Special shout-out to our Booster President Ms, Rachel Bayer, who got a Uhaul truck donated to move equipment. Drove the Uhaul and delivered sandwiches and water to the students that our boosters provided.

I am grateful to teach in Berkley, where I get to make music with such a fine group of students - it is a real blessing. Your musicianship and artistry are as uplifting as your camaraderie for one another.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

With Gratitude,

-Mr. Thomann

p.s. Jazz Ensemble is Monday at 7:30 am - please be on time. We have to continue our preparation for MSBOA Jazz Festival.

Berkley Bands | 11 Mar. MSBOA Reminders

Greetings Students and Families:

The focus and preparation that the students have shown in the rehearsal process since our mid-winter/pre-festival concert is admirable. I am looking forward to their artistry and musicianship in their performances tomorrow evening.

Can friends and families attend MSBOA Festival? Yes!

Please join us tomorrow night to support your children and all the students in the band program.

Addition Information About The Festival

  • There is no cost for admission.

  • Do not enter the auditorium when a band is performing on stage.

  • Silence all cell phones and electronic devices while a band is performing.

  • Hold your applause until the end of each musical selection.

  • Why is someone speaking in the back of the auditorium? One adjudicator offers feedback to the band using audio equipment.

  • There are three adjudicators and one clinician.

  • Each adjudicator will rate the band based on a rubric, i.e., I (highest musical achievement), II, III, IV, or V (lowest musical achievement. The majority of ratings equal the overall rating, e.g., I, I, II = I rating overall.

  • After each band's stage performance, a clinician will move to the performance stage and work with the students.

Student Reminders

  • Concert Band students will stay in the band after their band class and rehearse with the 3rd-Hour.

  • Wind Symphony students need to report to the band room during their 2nd-hour to rehearse with Concert Band.

  • All band students are to report to the band room after their 5th-hour class.

  • Concert Band and Wind Symphony students need to be wearing their concert-black attire before loading the bus. Please plan accordingly, e.g., wear your performance clothes to school, change during lunch, politely ask your 5th-hour teacher if you can leave a little early, change immediately after 5th-hour, etc.

  • Students should bring money for concessions at Bloomfield Hills. H.S. ***Bloomfield Hills informed me that the concessions items for sale are non-perishable snack items. *** If you wish to eat something more nutritious, please plan on bringing extra food with you.

  • Students will have access to the band room when we get back to BHS.

  • Students may leave their backpacks and other belongings in the band room if they wish.

  • Students are not to play or make a sound on any of their instruments or equipment unless Mr. Thomann gives them permission.

  • Students are not allowed to switch busses after they have signed up.

  • Masks are optional on the bus and at Bloomfield H.S.

BHS Bands | Update S&E | Valentines Day Jazz Concert | Midwinter Concert | Festival | BHS Musical | Band Camp Dates

Greetings Students and Families:

Feb. 5 | MSBOA District Solo and Ensemble

All student participants must read through the attached documents from Novi High School and MSBOA for guidelines.

Visit the band website for details, e.g., schedule, maps, and covid guidelines: District Solo and Ensemble. If you have any questions, please see or email Mr. Thomann.

MSBOA District 4 Solo & Ensemble Festival 2022

Safety Protocols

Novi High School site hosts have discussed safety protocols at length to keep everyone as safe as possible at this year’s in-person Solo & Ensemble Festival. In doing so, we have consulted Oakland County Health guidelines, CDC recommendations, and guidance from medical professionals. Following the protocols outlined below will ensure a safe and enjoyable festival for all participants– recognizing that those with compromised immune systems may be in attendance.

Safety Protocols for Solo & Ensemble

  1. Masks: Per Novi Community Schools policy– Masks covering the nose and mouth are required while indoors at High School. We recognize that each school district has requirements specific to their district, however, the requirements in place for Novi Community Schools must be followed for all spectators and performers at the host site. Wind players (woodwind AND brass) have two options while in warm-up and performance rooms: 1) Wear a musician's mask (slit mask) while playing; or 2) Wear a regular mask, pull it down to play, and return the mask to cover the mouth and nose when not playing.

  2. Bell Covers: Bell covers for all wind instruments (except flute) are required for both warm-up and performance rooms. This is consistent with current MSBOA and NCSD guidance/practice.

  3. Warm-Up Rooms: Woodwind and brass performers MUST wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth when not actively playing their instrument. Spectators will not be allowed in the warm-up room, but may wait in the hallway.

  4. Performance Rooms: Students may remove masks while performing but bell covers must remain. Spectators may enter the performance rooms, but please limit to one person per performer.

  5. Close Contact: Everyone entering Novi High School is expected to monitor their own social distance and remain 6 feet apart from other people to the best of their ability.

  6. Non-Performer Access: In order to provide ample social distance and limit potential crowds, only one member of a student’s family will be allowed inside Novi High School to accompany the student. Others should remain outside the building.

  7. Arrive, Perform, Depart: Students should arrive 30 minutes prior to their assigned performance time. They should expect to get a maximum of 10 minutes of warm-up time inside the warm-up room. Students will be spaced out as much as possible in the warm-up room. It is likely there will be anywhere from 2 - 4 students/events in the warm-up room at a time. Keep in mind “Warm-Up Rooms” are for warming-up only; practicing needs to happen prior to arriving at Novi High School.

  8. Quarantine: Anyone under quarantine at the time of the event, or anyone with close contact to somebody known to have a positive COVID test in the 10 days prior to the event should not attend the Solo & Ensemble festival.

  9. COVID Symptoms: Anyone displaying ANY of the following symptoms should not report:

  • Fever of 100.4 degrees or higher or feeling feverish (chills, sweating)

  • New cough

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Sore throat

  • Vomiting, Diarrhea, or abdominal pain

  • New loss of taste or smell

  • New onset of severe headache, especially with a fever

10.Thank you for keeping everyone safe. Your cooperation is much appreciated.

BHS Bands | Band Awards | Upcoming Events

Greetings Students and Families:

Band Awards/Varsity Letters

The previous system, where students earn points for band awards, e.g., pins and varsity letters, was designed without the challenges and limitations of attending school during a pandemic. After consulting with the administration, I have decided to alter how students in the band program receive these awards.

I will send more details about the new process and criteria soon. The awards will be announced and distributed during our band banquet in the spring. The exception to this will be students in the marching band who have completed two semesters of Marching Band and two semesters in one of the Concert Bands. Students who meet that criteria will receive their band letter tomorrow, so they can make the most out of that letter (should they want to buy a varsity jacket). Therefore, any junior and senior who has completed a minimum of two semesters of Marching Band and two semesters of a concert band will receive a Berkley High School Band Varsity Letter tomorrow. Students who have completed three years enrolled in one of the concert bands will also receive a varsity letter, which would apply to any seniors who fit that description.

If you have any questions, contact Mr. Thomann.

Coaches vs. Cancer B-Ball rescheduled for Feb. 15

Unfortunately, the Coaches vs. Cancer game date has changed to Feb. 15, which conflicts with our Mid-Winter/Pre-Festival Concert. Hopefully, we will be able to participate next year.

Berkley Bands | Band Room Access/Parade Update

Dear Students and Families:

I hope you are all doing ok. I have talked with Mr. Meloche, and I reached out to some of our BHS Band Parents to get a sense of their thoughts on participating in the Berkley Holiday Lights Parade. The consense is to participate and march in the parade.

Band Room Access/Itinerary Link

Any student who needs to retrieve their instrument, music, or other music equipment for the parade will be able to access the band room today from 10:30 am - 1:00 pm, and tomorrow, Saturday morning between 10:30 am - 1:00 pm.

***If you enter the school to retrieve something from the band room, it is imperative that you enter the school and leave in a timely fashion. You are not to wander around the school. You are only allowed to enter the band room to get your instrument.

Please click on the link below to access the itinerary for tomorrow. The link includes where and when students are to meet.

https://www.berkleybands.org/berkley-holiday-lights-parade

Uniform Reminders

All marching band students need to wear their full marching band uniform and raincoat to help keep themselves stay warm. All students are encouraged to wear warm clothes underneath their marching band uniform. Students must wear black socks and marching shoes. Students may wear a holiday hat, e.g., a Santa hat, or they must wear their shako. Students may wear gloves. Students are allowed to add lights to their instruments if they wish. If you have any questions about the uniform, contact Mr. Thomann.

Words of Encouragement

There is no question that this week has been difficult for many students and their families, and I know that some students and families may be hesitant about their students participating. If you fall into this category and have any concerns or questions, please let me know.

Lastly, I shared a portion of a letter that Leonard Bernstein penned in the wake of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, affectionately known as the artist's response to violence.

We musicians, like everyone else, are numb with sorrow at this murder, and with rage at the senselessness of the crime. But this sorrow and rage will not inflame us to seek retribution; rather they will inflame our art. Our music will never again be quite the same. This will be our reply to violence: to make music more intensely, more beautifully, more devotedly than ever before. And with each note we will honor their spirit..."

*** I have altered the second to last work from "the" to "their"***

Please know I care deeply about your children. They are my students, and I will do everything within my control to keep them safe. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Go Bears and Carry On,

-Mr. Thomann

I also want to reassure everyone that our student's safety is my highest priority. I promise to send an update as soon as I have more guidance and information from district leadership.

Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.

Berkley Bands | Glow-Show Reminder/Update

Greetings Students and Families:

Friendly reminder that we have the Royal Oak Glow show tonight. If students can report to Royal Oak H.S. at 6:00 pm instead of 6:30 pm to rehearse Thriller with the Royal Oak H.S. and Clawson H.S. Marching Bands, that would be great. If you can't alter your plans, I understand, and we will still make it work.

Help Needed

As mentioned on Monday night, we need two parent/guardian volunteers to assist the Royal Oak Band Boosters, who have graciously invited us to attend their show. Hosting events like this takes a lot of time and organization. I hope we can support our musical neighbors by providing a couple of volunteers. To volunteer please contact Mr. Thomann or register at the bottom of the Royal Oak Glow Show page on the Berkley Bands website.

Berkley Bands | Monday Night-Video Recording/Community Performance | Thank You's

Greetings Students and Families:

Congratulations to our seniorstheir parents, and their families and support group. Tonight represents the first of the last for many of our seniors, and I hope you know that we are all happy for you and proud of you.

Thank You's

A huge thank you to the high school marching band students for cultivating a positive experience for the 7th and 8th-grade middle school band students despite the rain.

Thank you to all of the 7th and 8th-grade band students who came out tonight. We hope you had a great time, and we hope you will be joining the band family at Berkley H.S.

Big thank you to Ms. Hoste and Mr. Engle for being at the game tonight. We are fortunate to have such a great music education team at Berkley, and I am very thankful to call them my colleagues.

Tonight we also honored our seniors by announcing them over the P.A., and tonight we gave each senior a piece of memorabilia from the band. Each senior received a customized old shako (marching band hat) to celebrate their senior class. A very appropriate gift as the class of 2022 is also the last class to wear the old marching band uniform. If you get the chance, please thank Ms. Rachel Bayer, our Berkley Instrumental Booster President - she came up with the idea and took the time out of her busy schedule to customize each shako. Ms. Bayer, on behalf of our seniors and their families, thank you for making this night that much more special.

Video Recording/Community Performance | Monday, Oct. 18 @ Hurley Field from 8:00-9:30 pm

I know that this is short notice, but I think it is worth a shot. We have rehearsal on Monday night, and I think it would be great to use Monday's rehearsal time to take a high-quality video that I can share with the students and their families.

For this to be a success, all BHS Marching Band students must wear their marching band uniform to the practice with their shako.

I also want to invite family members and the community to watch the recording and have the opportunity to watch and listen to the marching band in a more controlled environment.

Photo/Video Help

I also want to use part of Monday's rehearsal to take a picture of students as a group in their uniform that I can share with everyone. If you own or have access to a high-quality camera, or video camera, I could use your help. Please send me an email if you can offer up your expertise, email me at jonathan.thomann@berkleyschools.org.

Berkley Bands | Senior Night Update

Greeting Senior Students and Families:

We are excited to celebrate your journey as a Senior in the Berkley High School Marching Band with your family on Friday, October 15 (the last regularly scheduled home football game). A lot of work has gone into making this event special for you and our seniors. In many ways, this is the first of the lasts for our seniors. If I have learned anything from the last two years, it is to make the most out of these moments while we can.

The marching band will follow the same schedule as the previous home games. The marching band will perform pre-game and throughout the football game. The marching band will perform their show Carry On during half-time. After Carry On My Wayward Son, the announcer will invite the senior marching band students to the front of the field to perform their selected song, The Greatest Show, from their freshman marching band show, The Greatest Showman. During this transition, the announcer will invite senior parents down to the track at this time as well.

When the seniors and the marching band finish playing The Greatest Show, the announcer will introduce each senior and their designated family members. At that point, the student will step forward, and their family will present them with a gift from the Band program (this is a good photo opportunity as well). Please take the time to fill out this form, and submit it as soon as possible (if you have not filled it out).

***NEW***Royal Oak H.S. Band Glow Show - More Details Soon

I did not include the Royal Oak H.S. Band Glow Show on the band calendar because it conflicted with parent-teacher conference night. After the cancelation of the Belleville H.S. Band Review, I spoke with Mr. Meloche about the band performing at Royal Oak. Without hesitation, Mr. Meloche gave me the green light to take the band to Royal Oak H.S. I understand that his does conflict with parent-teacher conferences, but with so many event cancelations over the last year and a half we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to offer the students chances to perform. Plus, this is a cool event. Please save the date for now, and I will send out more information and details soon.

Berkley Bands | Belleville Show/Trip Canceled Due To Weather

Greetings Students and Families:

Unfortunately, Belleville H.S. has canceled the show tonight due to weather conditions. Here is the message I received from their coordinators for the show. All Berkley H.S. marching band students are to continue a full day of class including attending their 6th hour - there will be no early release today. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Dear Band Directors,

Sadly, this email is to inform you that, given the on-going threat of rain today, the 2021 Band Review event has been canceled. The 28th annual will have to wait for next year. We are making this call now because even while we might have periods of clearing, the weather forecast suggests we might be dodging raindrops throughout the event period, and that just wouldn't be fun for anyone, performers or spectators.

Please pass this along to your band members and others who need to know. Also, if you wouldn't mind, please reply to this so that I know you've received it. I will try to contact you via other means if I do not hear from you by noon.

I'm sorry to have to deliver this news, and I hope you'll consider joining us again next year. Thank you for your past participation and your interest, and I hope you and your bands have a wonderful season!

Berkley Bands | MSBOA All-State Band/Jazz/Orchestra Auditions | BHS Jazz Band Auditions

Greetings Students and Families:

Each year almost 2,000 students audition to perform as members in one of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association All-State Ensembles. Students serious about performing on their instrument are highly encouraged to apply and audition for the all-state high school band, orchestra, or jazz band.

Please visit the MSBOA website by clicking on this link for more information if you choose.

About the MSBOA All-State Program (from MSBOA)

https://www.msboa.org/Events/All-State.aspx

The MSBOA All-State program was established in the 2005 - 06 school year. Five ensembles are selected from recorded auditions: a Middle School String Orchestra, a Middle School Band, a High School Full Orchestra, a High School Band, and a High School Jazz Ensemble. Students must prepare an announced etude, a series of scales, and sight-read during every 10 minutes recorded audition. Each audition is submitted using only an identification number with no reference to the student or school. The auditions are evaluated by an adjudicator and placed in order. The required number of instruments is selected to fill each section. An average of over 2,000 students auditions each year for the 400 seats in our five ensembles.

In January the students assemble for two and a half days of rehearsal with nationally recognized conductors. A concert is held on the Saturday of the Michigan Music Conference.

Severe Weather Update from Belleville (BHS = Belleville H.S. in the Message Below)

Alas, Mother Nature is giving me a reason for yet another email!

As last night's weather forecast indicates, there is a chance of rain on Wednesday. I've been in touch with the BHS directors, and at this point, we are proposing to make a call on Wednesday's event by 3:30 pm that afternoon at the latest. Will that give you enough time to notify your band members and transportation folks if we need to cancel? If not, please propose a time and we will work on that.

I apologize for asking you to have to deal with this given all of the other challenges of your day. Since 2006 when I took over the coordinator role, we have never canceled an event or postponed it due to rain (although we came close once), and I hope this is not the first year!

Thanks.

28th Annual Belleville High School Band Review
BHS Bands: Marching Band Itinerary

22, 2019 - times may change pending official schedule

Belleville High School has released its information for their annual Belleville Marching Band review, held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021. I expect all marching band students to attend this performance. Communicate with Mr. Thomann immediately if you have a conflict. This performance is open to the public, and we encourage all of our marching band families and friends to attend. The spectators in the stands for this performance are very different from that of a football game, very supportive and attentive which will allow the audience to experience the marching band's performance with ease (you will be able to hear the band without a lot of other distractions). The official schedule and performance time for Berkley High School is going to be released soon. Please click on the link below to access the Tentative Itinerary for the day of the event.

Berkley Bands | Weekly Reminder Aug. 30 - Sept. 3

Dear Students and Families:

I am excited for the students to have their hard work pay off at our first football game of the season. Details for the week are listed below. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Attendance is Crucial

Every student in the marching band must attend rehearsal on Monday night. Because marching band is a curricular class, attendance or lack thereof will impact a student's grade once school is in session. Student attendance may affect the ability of a student to participate in the pre-game and half-time performance.

Please do not view this as a form of punishment. The reality is that when a student misses a marching band rehearsal, they miss information, they miss crucial repetitions in the drill, and as a result, could hurt themselves or someone else when they are marching.

Yes, marching band can be a contact sport. (See the example below.)

Berkley Bands | Student Schedule Issues

Greetings Students and Families:

I have received some email from students and their families about potential mistakes with students' band schedules. I received my class rosters this morning for the school year, and can confirm that there are many issues and corrections that need to be made. I am working on resolving this with counselors and administration today and tomorrow.

I apologize for this inconvenience and I hope that these schedule changes will be addressed before our students return to school on Monday to attend their first day of classes.

Berkley Bands | Tonight's Rehearsal is Moved to Hurley Field 7:00-9:00 pm

Hi Everyone,

I have good news! We recently gained access to Hurley Field about ten minutes ago. I know that this is an inconvenience. I am not a fan of changing rehearsals and locations, but we have not been able to get access to a proper football field to rehearse on since band camp. As you know we have a football game on August 3 and this will greatly improve the band's ability to be prepared for the game.

Please check-in with other band members to let them know of the change.

Berkley Bands | Rehearsal Reminder 8.17 @ BHS Courtyard from 7-8:30 pm (Ending Early)

Greetings Students and Families:

I will be dismissing students from rehearsal at 8:30 pm instead of 9:00 pm. The reason for this change is due to a facility issue. I am working to resolve this issue for Thursday's practice to run from 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

Tonight's rehearsal will be in the BHS courtyard. Students who need to access the band room must enter from the band room emergency exit door. Students are not allowed in the hallway connected to the band room due to another coat of wax that needs to dry.

Please plan to arrive at BHS so we can start rehearsal at 7:00 pm in the courtyard.

If you have any questions, contact Mr. Thomann.

This year we ask that you stand in front of Anderson, like on a game day. The students march from the High School to Hurley Field (see below for the exact parade route). When the students arrive at Hurley Field, they will perform the Star-Spangled Banner. We invite family members, friends, and community members to join the marching band in the parking lot for the National Anthem, and then the students will make their way to the field to debut their 2021-22 pre-game performance and the half-time show. After the show, we will have a BBQ and our dessert contest.

A Berkley Police escort, Fire Truck, and BHS Cheer will be joining the marching band to kick off the season as we march to a drum cadence from Catalpa and Coolidge toward Tyler street, where we will enter the Hurley Stadium parking lot.

We encourage all audience members to gather in front of Anderson Middle School and follow the marching band into the stadium.

I am really excited for the 2021-22 marching band season and for our students to connect after band camp next week for all of the activities. Each night we will have a new theme and as much as we highly encourage the students to be part of the activities so the students can have fun off the field, it is not required.

Monday is our ice cream party which will take place in the BHS courtyard. Along with delicious ice cream, we will have yard games for the students/parents to play. We are also going to have a tie-dye station. Each section is going to have a flag that they are going to design and tie-dye tonight. Tuesday morning these flags will be hung at Hurley.

Tuesday is karaoke night. This is always a fun night as the students get to watch their peers showing off their hidden talent of singing and dancing. Every year the students who don’t like karaoke always feel if they don’t sing then they should stay home. This is not the case. We highly encourage everyone to come and support one another.

Wednesday we have a movie night. The upperclassman has requested this night to be dedicated to High School Musical. We are going to show High School Musical 3. We are planning on showing this outdoors on an outdoor movie screen so bring a blanket or lawn chair. If the weather is an issue or technology becomes an issue, we will move this indoors to either the theater or the band room.

Thursday is our traditional pizza party & paper plate awards. This by far is one of the best nights for the students. First, we have pizza but then their section leader will present them with an award.

Friday we end our long week of band camp with the show the students have worked so hard on. This year we are going to showcase the show, the students, and our program. Mr. Thomann will have more details as to how camp will look that day. Parents though will meet at Hurley Field at 11:30 am but this year we ask that you stand in front of Anderson as we normally would on game day. The students are going to march from the High School to Hurley Field. Once the students make it to Hurley Field we ask that the family stays in the parking lot as we are going to play the National Anthem to honor all the hero’s and then the students will make their way to the field to debut their 2021-22 marching band show. After the show, we will have a BBQ and our dessert contest.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me @

Greetings Student and Families:

Should we experience severe weather or rain, the marching band will move indoors at Anderson Middle School and work on music in the Anderson Middle School media center.

Students should bring a cloth/medical mask and their playing mask if they still have them. I will have medical masks for students if someone shows up without one.

If inclement weather occurs, students will be encouraged to communicate with their parents/guardians. For communication assistance, I have set up a REMIND to streamline communication. Subscribe by clicking on this link: https://www.remind.com/join/berkleyma. The REMIND will be used to communicate information that is out of our control, e.g., inclement weather, late arrivals to and from an event due to traffic, etc.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Recommended Rehearsal Materials - From the Berkley H.S. Marching Band Packet

These materials may be purchased wherever you would like, and do not have to be a certain brand or color (with the exception of the black towel). For accessibility, links have been provided to assist in locating each item.

1-Gallon Water Bottle

This must be a one-gallon jug. We have found that a half-gallon jug is not sufficient for outside rehearsals in the sun. It is recommended that the student’s name is written on the bottle as well. These can be found at local sporting goods stores or online.

Music Binder with Page Protectors

Students are recommended to use a zip-up binder in the event that it rains. Sheet protectors are required to hold the music in place. It is recommended to use “anti-glare” sheet protectors so that music is still readable while rehearsing outside.

Flip Folders and Lyres - Students are encouraged to memorize their music for pregame and halftime. Students may use flip folders and lyres if they need to. Students are encouraged to use flip folders and lyres in the stands. ***If you have questions about flip folders and lyres please contact Mr. Thomann.

Pencils

All students are required to have pencils at every rehearsal. It does not matter if they are mechanical or not.

Other:

  • Hat and Sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Bug Spray

  • Athletic Clothes - Students must be able to perform physical activities. (No Jeans)

    • Avoid dark clothing

  • Athletic Shoes - Students should wear athletic shoes to perform physical activities in.

  • Woodwinds - 2-3 Reeds at all times

  • Brass - Valve Oil

  • Percussion - Sticks and Mallets

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have a great day, and see you tomorrow.

Ice Cream Social Donations, Message From B.I.B.

Below is a message from the Berkley Instrumental Booster President, Rachel Bayer. For questions about the Ice Cream Social please contact Rachel Bayer: rachel.bayer@berkleyschools.org.

The ice cream social is a chance for students and parents to laugh and get to know each other on a more personal level. I am hoping this year that we can be more intentional on the upper-class students taking in new students under their wings. I’m also hoping parents who are involved and know each other will be more intentional with new parents.

We need donations for the actual ice cream. I’m still working on how to keep the ice cream frozen but in past years parents have donated the ice cream for this event.

The Ice Cream Social is taking place on Monday, August 2 at BHS in the Courtyard.
